Contrasting Hurricane Theories Heat Up

In a paper published in the journal Science on October 31, Gabriel A. Vecchi of NOAA/GFDL, Kyle L. Swanson of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and Brian J. Soden from UM’s Rosenstiel School teamed up to study hurricane data observed over +50 years. They explore the relationship between sea surface temperature and seasonal hurricane activity, and show that differing hypotheses of the observational record can imply vastly different futures for Atlantic hurricane activity due to global warming. Celebrity Cruises announced the Godmother of the most widely-heralded cruise ship to enter the market this year, Celebrity Solstice. Atypically, she’s not a star of stage and screen; instead, she is a ‘star’ in biological oceanography. Dr. Sharon L. Smith, is the first ocean scientist ever to serve as Godmother of a cruise ship.
